If you were at Tea Fest Portland, you already know how good this is. The Mizuba Shizuoka Sunrise was one of the most hyped drinks we served — tropical, refreshing, not-too-sweet, and just pure fun in a cup. The secret? Our umami-forward matcha balances the sweetness from the POG (passion fruit, orange, guava juice) in a way that just works. This recipe was developed by our very own Ivy, and we're so excited to finally share it with everyone.
What is a Shizuoka Sunrise?
Think of it as a matcha meets tropical sunrise moment. Layers of POG, coconut water, and refreshing sparkling water topped with a slow pour of freshly-whisked matcha that cascades down through the drink. It's as beautiful as it is delicious.
Ingredients
- ½ teaspoon matcha (we recommend our Yama Matcha)
- 1 ounce cool water
- 4 ounces POG (found at local grocery stores)
- 2 ounces coconut water
- 2 ounces sparkling water or seltzer
Recipe
- Whisk matcha with cool water until smooth.
- Fill a cup with ice and pour in POG, coconut water, and sparkling water.
- Slowly pour matcha over the top to create a layered effect.
Tips for the Perfect Pour
The layered effect is all in the pour and how cold your ingredients are. Go slow and pour over the back of a spoon to keep the matcha floating on top before it gradually sinks. Use a clear cup to show off the sunrise gradient.
