Shizuoka Sunrise — Our All-Time Favorite Specialty Matcha Recipe

Shizuoka Sunrise — Our All-Time Favorite Specialty Matcha Recipe

If you were at Tea Fest Portland, you already know how good this is. The Mizuba Shizuoka Sunrise was one of the most hyped drinks we served — tropical, refreshing, not-too-sweet, and just pure fun in a cup. The secret? Our umami-forward matcha balances the sweetness from the POG (passion fruit, orange, guava juice) in a way that just works. This recipe was developed by our very own Ivy, and we're so excited to finally share it with everyone.

What is a Shizuoka Sunrise?

Think of it as a matcha meets tropical sunrise moment. Layers of POG, coconut water, and refreshing sparkling water topped with a slow pour of freshly-whisked matcha that cascades down through the drink. It's as beautiful as it is delicious.

Ingredients

  • ½ teaspoon matcha (we recommend our Yama Matcha)
  • 1 ounce cool water
  • 4 ounces POG (found at local grocery stores)
  • 2 ounces coconut water
  • 2 ounces sparkling water or seltzer

Recipe

  1. Whisk matcha with cool water until smooth.
  2. Fill a cup with ice and pour in POG, coconut water, and sparkling water.
  3. Slowly pour matcha over the top to create a layered effect.

Tips for the Perfect Pour

The layered effect is all in the pour and how cold your ingredients are. Go slow and pour over the back of a spoon to keep the matcha floating on top before it gradually sinks. Use a clear cup to show off the sunrise gradient.
